Garage door repairs and servicing

Most call-outs are a spring, a cable or a worn roller, and most are fixed on the first visit. The call-out is £120, or £180 same day, and parts are quoted before they go on.

A garage door that has suddenly become impossibly heavy has almost always broken a spring. The springs carry the weight of the door; without them you are lifting the lot. It is the single most common call we get and it is a routine fix.

The second most common is a door that opens crooked or drops on one side — usually a cable that has come off its drum or snapped. The third is an electric door that has stopped responding, which is as often a safety sensor or a limit setting as it is a dead motor.

We carry the common parts on the van, so if it is a standard spring or cable the door is working again before we leave. Anything less common gets ordered in and we come back.

Before
The same garage with a new box-profile roof, anthracite door and white cladding
After
Two different angles

Tired garage brought back from the brink

The old up-and-over had lost most of its paint and the flat roof had gone back to bare, rotten boards. Roof, door, fascia and side cladding were all replaced in one visit - a new box-profile roof, anthracite door and white cladding right round.

Detail

What that means on the job

Broken springs

Torsion and extension springs on all the common gear. Replaced in pairs so you are not back to the same job in six months.

Cables, drums and rollers

Snapped cables, cables off the drum, worn rollers and nylon wheels, bent tracks and dropped hinges.

Electric operator faults

Doors that stop halfway, reverse for no reason, or will not respond. Sensors, limits, drive gears and handset reprogramming.

Locks, handles and forced doors

Seized locks, snapped handles, and making a forced door secure again.

Before you decide

Straight answers

The part of the conversation most quotes leave out.

Right for you if

  • A door that has suddenly gone very heavy to lift
  • A door that opens crooked or drops on one side
  • An electric door that stops halfway or reverses on its own
  • An annual service on a door you would rather did not break

Worth knowing first

  • Torsion springs hold a lot of energy and are genuinely dangerous to work on without the right bars. Please leave that one to us.
  • If a door is more than about twenty years old and the frame has gone, a repair can be money after bad. We will tell you when replacing is the better spend.

Questions

Common questions

My garage door is suddenly very heavy. What is wrong?

Nearly always a broken spring. Stop using the door — the weight is now on you and on the gear — and give us a ring. It is a routine repair.

What does a repair cost?

The call-out is £120, or £180 if you need us the same day. Parts are on top of that and we tell you what they come to before we fit them. If the job turns out to be bigger than a call-out, you get a price before we go any further.

How quickly can you come out?

Repairs are prioritised over quotes. If your door is stuck open and the garage is not secure, say so when you ring.

Is it worth repairing or should I replace the door?

If the door and the frame are sound, repair every time — it is a fraction of the cost. If the frame has gone and the leaf is rusting through, we will say so.

Do you service doors you did not fit?

Yes, whoever fitted it and whoever made it.
