Garage doors
A single leaf that tilts up and back into the garage. The simplest door there is, the least expensive, and still the right answer for a lot of garages.
There are two kinds. A canopy door pivots on arms at the sides and about a third of the leaf stays out under the lintel when it is open — no tracks inside, cheap and simple. A retractable door runs fully back into the garage on horizontal tracks, which is heavier gear but far better if you want it automated.
Both need clear space in front while the door swings. If you park tight to the garage, this is not your door — say so early and we will price a roller instead.
The old up-and-over had lost most of its paint and the flat roof had gone back to bare, rotten boards. Roof, door, fascia and side cladding were all replaced in one visit - a new box-profile roof, anthracite door and white cladding right round.

Canopy for the simplest and cheapest fit. Retractable where you want an electric operator or a heavier leaf.
Galvanised steel for most jobs. GRP where you want a timber look without the maintenance.
Springs take the weight so the leaf is light to lift by hand. Spring replacement is a routine repair for us later on.
Most older up-and-over doors are hung on timber that has had enough. We price a steel frame as an option so you can compare.

Red-stained timber side-hinged doors that had rotted along the bottom rail, replaced with an anthracite up-and-over. The pitched box-profile roof and new fascia went on at the same time.
The blue up-and-over had rusted through at the bottom and the timber surround had gone soft. New anthracite up-and-over, white cladding to the posts and head, and a new roof edge.
Questions
A canopy door leaves about a third of the leaf projecting under the lintel when open and has no tracks inside. A retractable door runs all the way back into the garage on tracks. Retractable costs more and automates properly.
A retractable one, yes, and it works well. A canopy door can be converted with a conversion kit but it is rarely worth the money — we would rather quote you a retractable door or a roller.
Almost certainly a spring. That is a repair rather than a new door, and usually a same-visit fix. See the repairs page.
A modern up-and-over with a proper lock and a sound frame is fine for most domestic use. If the garage is detached and out of sight, ask us about additional locking.
