Side-hinged garage doors
Two leaves on hinges, opening outwards. The door to choose when the garage is really a workshop, a store or a bike shed and you want to get in without opening the whole thing.
You keep the full height of the opening because there is no gear above the door and nothing rolling up. That matters in a garage with a low lintel, or one with a beam across it that rules out a sectional door.
The practical advantage is everyday access. One leaf opens for the mower, the bins or the bikes, and the car stays where it is. Split them 50/50, or a third and two-thirds if one side gets used far more.

Worth knowing first
- They swing outwards, so you need clear ground in front and the drive needs to fall away from the door rather than towards it.
- In an exposed spot, a leaf caught by the wind is a real nuisance. Hold-backs are worth having.
- Automation is possible but uncommon and adds cost.

Questions
Common questions
Can side-hinged doors open inwards?
Yes, if there is room inside and the floor is level enough. It is worth doing on an exposed drive where wind would catch an outward leaf.
Do they need a step or a threshold?
There is a low threshold to seal against. We check the floor level at the survey because a drive that falls towards the garage changes the answer.
Are they as weathertight as a sectional door?
Close, on an insulated steel pair with good seals, but a sectional door is still the better sealed of the two.
Can I keep my existing frame?
Rarely worth it. Side-hinged doors put all their weight on the hinges, so the frame has to be sound. We price a new frame as standard.
